Why Come To Class?

There is something irreplaceable about being in a room with other curious people. The laughter, the debate, the moment when someone says something that changes your perspective.

Research is clear: staying mentally active, socially connected, and physically engaged are among the most important things we can do for our health and cognition as we age. Our classes give you all three. You exercise your mind with challenging material, get out of the house and into a welcoming community, and meet new people who share your love of ideas. These programs are not just for what we learn, but for who we get to learn it with.

What is an Athenaeum?

An athenaeum (from the Greek Ἀθήναιον, Athēnaion) was originally a temple dedicated to Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom, learning, and the arts. In ancient Athens, it was a place where scholars, poets, and philosophers gathered to read, debate, and share ideas.

The word was later adopted by the Romans, who used it to describe schools of rhetoric and philosophy. By the 18th and 19th centuries, "athenaeum" had come to mean a literary or scientific institution — a place where educated citizens could gather to read and pursue knowledge together. Boston's famous Athenaeum, founded in 1807, is one of the oldest independent libraries in the United States.

The name felt exactly right. An athenaeum is not a classroom, not a lecture hall, and not a library — it is a gathering place for people who love ideas. That is precisely what we are setting out to create.
